Marine Drive is the new hot zone for hotels and restaurants, but there was a need for a more causal, relaxed restaurant on the strip, bordering the railway line and the sea. This void seems to have filled by the brand-new Boo restaurant, a multi-cuisine eatery at Marine Drive. The easy-to-remember names comes from Italy, where there is a famous restaurant named Boo.
Comprising the main restaurant, bar and coffee shop, with 40 covers in the bar and 75 covers in the restaurant, Boo can accommodate a large number of people in one setting. The restaurant offers range of foods - Sri Lankan, Indian, Chinese, Western (mainly Italian) and Eastern. The restaurant specializes in Jaffna foods such as mutton and crab curries which are very popular among the clientele. They also offer the “gam kukula” chicken curry, which is hard to find in Colombo. If there is anything you like in particular, just tell the chef and he will try to make it for you. If you do not have time to sit down and eat, there is a special take-away menu on offer. Fast food options such as burgers are available at the coffee shop.
Open from 7.30 am to 11.30 pm, the restaurant is popular among the working crowd during the day time and families during the evenings. All items are reasonably priced. The reviews on social media sites such as Facebook are very positive and the owners are always open to ideas of clients for improving the food and the ambience of the restaurant. The ambience is a major feature of the restaurant – one can see a spectacular sunset over the ocean from the restaurant at dusk.
The owners wanted to create a simple restaurant that everyone could patronize without spending too much money on a quality meal and they seem to have achieved that goal. Although there are several new restaurants along the Marine Drive from Kollupitiya to Wellawatte, Boo seems to have emerged as a front-runner.
