Oct 23, Colombo: MV Maersk Milan, a Denmark flagged vessel owned by Maersk has docked at Sri Lanka's Colombo Port, making it the biggest ship to enter a port in South Asia, Colombo International Container Terminal (CICT) said.
The 399 meter long and 58.6 meter wide ship entered into service last month, berthed at the Chinese administered Colombo International Container Terminal on 17 October. The ship carries a deadweight of 210,019 tonnes and has a capacity of 20,568 TEUs.
To mark the occasion, a ceremony was organized on board MV Milan Maersk at the CICT Terminal at the Colombo port. Senior officials from the Maersk Group along with Sri Lanka Ports Authority (SLPA) Chairman Dr. Parakrama Dissanayake and CICT Chairman Ray Ren attended the event. USA Ambassador to Sri Lanka Atul Keshap was the special guest for the event.
This modern megaship belonging to the second generation of Maersk Line's Triple-E class (Economy of scale, Energy efficient, Environmentally improved), is the fastest service from Colombo into major North European countries such as the UK, the Netherlands & Germany, that will also bring essential imports from China and South East Asia into the Sri Lankan market.
SLPA Chairman commended Maersk Line for the confidence shown by them to call the port of Colombo with one of their largest ships. He said Maersk had a long-term relationship with Colombo port and affirmed that the growth of the port of Colombo has been synonymous with the type of support and unwavering loyalty extended by companies such as Maersk.
At present, Maersk Line in Sri Lanka purports 10-weekly services, which include vessel sharing agreements and connecting Colombo to global ports with competitive transit times and high schedule reliability,
Commenting on this historic occasion, Julian Michael Bevis, Senior Director, Group Relations, South Asia, AP Moller Maersk commended the SLPA and the Government of Sri Lanka for their "foresight in developing the Sri Lanka port to hold the capacity of a ship of this nature, that is well in keeping with other leading international ports."
